Historic Southwell Company

The war between the states had just ended. The rumble of ox carts along the narrow streets of old San Antonio was a familiar sound when a little shop was opened on Commerce Street for the purpose of making stencils for wool and cotton shippers. This was the humble beginning of our company. Rubber stamps and Seals were later added to meet the growing demands of the businessmen of Texas for these essential products.

In 1912, George T. Southwell purchased the company from one of the employees of the original founder. At that time the SAN ANTONIO RUBBER STAMP CO. had one employee in the shop and a part time delivery boy. Upon the death of Geo. T. Southwell in 1924, active management of the company was taken over by his son, W.P. “Bill” Southwell, Jr. In 1953 the name of the firm was changed to The Southwell Company, which consolidated the operation of three manufacturing divisions; stamps, decals, and plaques.

In 1977, Billy Southwell, the fourth generation to work in the family business, joined his father and grandfather and now serves as President. He is assisted by a most efficient staff of office, plant, and sales personnel. In 1989, Scott Southwell, another fourth generation family member, joined his father and older brother in the family business and now serves as Vice-President.

In 1936 the company was awarded the contract to manufacture all of the bronze historical markers for the Texas Centennial. Since then thousands of cast aluminum historical markers have been provided for the State of Texas. In 1976, the company was selected to manufacture all of the historical markers for the Bicentennial. Many of our architectural signage products can be found in England and Saudi Arabia.

Now we manufacture the finest marking products using the latest technology. We have lasers, computerized routers, computer aided design, and the latest foundry techniques for casting truly ornate plaques, logos, and letters.
